I need to start this article by saying that I am Brazilian, currently living in São Paulo, whose average winter temperature is 17oC / 62.6 oF. My perspective is as follows …
Minnesota is a State of contrasts, specifically when it comes to climate!!! I had the opportunity to visit Minneapolis during opposite seasons: summer and (almost) winter!!! It’s amazing how both seasons can be so intense and how the city transforms and has a unique beauty in each one!
My relationship with the State of Minnesota started when my oldest son, two years ago, started his undergrad in Chemical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus.
My first visit to Minneapolis took place in August 2019, and I was simply delighted. It is a cosmopolitan city, with excellent and traditional educational institutions, a center for fostering and developing innovation, with welcoming and hospitable people.
Minnesota is also home to major and important corporations, such as 3M, Ecolab, General Mills, Target, UnitedHealth Group, Best Buy, Land O’Lakes, Polaris Industries, among many others. It is also home to the Medical Alley Association, bringing together the largest health technology innovation cluster in the world, the largest health insurance company in the USA (and also present in Brazil), and the Mayo Clinic, recognized as one of the best hospitals in the USA. Two words, in my opinion, define Minnesota: solid and impressive!
My second visit to Minnesota took place in December 2019 for a 10-day period. At that time, I experienced the lowest temperature of my life (so far): – 24oC / – 11.2oF. It turns out that with the appropriate clothing and shoes, we are protected from the cold! The cold didn’t stop us when we went to see the Christmas lights show at the University’s Engineering building, nor did we stop walking around the city and enjoying the best Minneapolis and Saint Paul have to offer.
I also had the opportunity to attend an event promoted by the Brazil-Minnesota Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the law firm Fredrikson & Byron, PA on the subject “Doing Business in Brazil”, which connected companies and people actively engaged in business in Brazil with those interested in doing business in Brazil. It was an excellent opportunity to hear representatives of American companies talking about their vision of business development in Brazil and about the positive changes that have occurred in the Brazilian business environment in recent years.
I can’t wait to return to Minnesota, whether in winter or summer, and further explore the natural beauty of this State known as the “land of a thousand lakes”, as well as develop new opportunities in such a vibrant business environment!
I also take this opportunity to thank Robert Scarlet, representing the Brazil-Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, for constantly assisting me in contacts with companies and local government!
